One of the major universities in the Dutch-speaking region of Europe. The faculty of Engineering and Architecture has more than 2.200 students, 150 professors and 800 researchers. UGent leads the project team and coordinates the project.

It is also one of the main contributors to the development of the hybrid MPC design strategy in WP2, supporting the development of the building envelope model for the white-box controller model in WP3 and creating the building envelope models for the emulator models and developing the monitoring protocol for the case studies in WP4. In WP5, UGent is responsible for the calculation of the environmental impact and assisting in the extrapolation of the performances measured in WP4 to the building stock level.

PROF. DR. JELLE LAVERGE

Jelle Laverge is a research professor at Ghent University. In 2011 he received a master’s degree in Law from the same university. He has experience as a forensic engineer and is a part-time lawyer in construction law. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Texas at and is a member of ISIAQ, SRS and ASHRAE. His research is concentrated on optimal sizing of HVAC systems. He will be the lead advisor of the Ghent university research team involved in the project and the project coordinator.

DR. ELINE HIMPE

Eline Himpe is a postdoctoral researcher in the building physics, construction and services research group. She has experience in the energy monitoring of buildings and systems,  the evaluation and characterisation of the actual energy performance of occupied buildings based on measurement data, building life cycle energy analysis and definition of high performance building concepts. During her PhD she actively participated in the CONCERTO ECO-Life project (EU FP7 programme) and the IEA EBC Annex 58. Eline supports the overall technical and administrative management of the project and the Ghent University research team.

RANA MAHMOUD

Rana Mahmoud is a PhD researcher in the UGent building physics research group. In her research, she focuses on analysing the energy demand of the building stock in different countries in Europe and its influence on optimizing the size of GEOTABS system. Alongside this she is participating in the IEA Annex 70 project. Rana has 11 years of international working experience in design and execution of construction projects in Middle-east and Europe. She has a Masters Degree in renewable energy and energy efficiency from Kassel university in Germany.

MOHSEN SHARIFI

Mohsen is a PhD student in the building physics research group at Ghent university. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, from Sharif University, Tehran. He also received his Master’s Degree in Energy Systems Engineering from K. N. Toosi University, Tehran. He started to work on sustainability and carbon emission reduction plans for his master thesis. He has the experience of 4 years working in energy industries as a researcher working on optimisation of heat and steam generation processes in thermal power plants. His work in this project focuses on a design strategy for the hybridGEOTABS system considering the splitting of the loads covered by GEOTABS on one hand and by secondary systems on the other.

JOSUE BORRAJO BASTERO

Josué Borrajo Bastero has been a part of the Ghent University building physics research group since 2018. In 2014 he graduated as an Industrial Engineer and in 2015 he obtained a Masters Degree in Renewable Energy and Sustainability, both at Universiy of Vigo, in Spain. He worked for 3 years in the automotive industry in automated welding processes. His initial work in this project is with the BES-modelling of Haus M GEOTABS case-study building in Zürich.
